Creating your own character
Take a look at how you will be able to design and customize your character's appearance before stepping into the world of Hyboria. A myriad of choices is available to you as you make your own unique alter-ego.
So you’re moving to another world. Hyboria awaits -- a world where you may end up spending hours upon hours adventuring with thousands of other people from all over the world. When you are but one player of so many, it is very important to have a character that feels unique to you -- especially when it comes to the visual appearance. In Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures you are given some incredibly powerful tools when you set out to sculpt and customize the appearance of your alter-ego, and you’ll probably be spending quite some time pulling and moving sliders around to get the perfect result if that’s what you want. And there are a lot of sliders to play around with in Age of Conan.
The game starts on a Stygian slave galley at sea somewhere outside the Barachan Isles, where you’re introduced to your character -- a slave who has been robbed of his or hers identity -- as soon as you have selected a gender and a race. In Age of Conan there are three races the players will be able to choose from at launch:
Aquilonians are fair-skinned, grey-eyed, strong and organized. They are devoted to Mitra who is the God of Love and Health. King Conan is the ruler of Aquilonia.
Cimmerians are barbarians from the North of Hyboria. Cimmerians are bronze-skinned, dark-haired, and the biggest of the races. Conan himself hails from Cimmeria.
Stygians are small, bronze-skinned desert-dwellers who worship the evil God called Set. King Conan’s arch-nemesis, the evil Thoth-Amon, hails from Stygia.

Having chosen a gender and a race, your template character will rise up from his or hers seat in the galley. Customization of your character’s looks is then divided into two parts: body and face. When tweaking the body, you can choose to have an abstract slider going from thin to obese and muscular, and you’re able to select anything in between. You can also go into an advanced mode, scaling different body parts like the chest/breasts, the thighs, the legs, the arms, the stomach and even your “arse”. You’ll be able to add body hair, different kinds of tattoos, scars and many other elements that will make your character unique. And remember: Making someone look picture-perfect is not always the goal. In Age of Conan you can create a character that wouldn’t necessarily win a beauty contest! Ultimately, you decide what sort of character you want to role-play.

Age is also an element to character creation, and the game gives you the chance to make your character look young, adult or old – or anything in between. Depending on the race of your character, you’re also able to choose from a variety of different skin colors.
When sculpting your character’s face, you are given even more options then when creating the body. There are literally dozens of bones and muscles implemented in the face of each model, and you’ll have the opportunity to tweak these accordingly. Some of these options include eyebrow scale, cheek depth/width/height, chin length/width, ear angle/size, eyes angle/depth, jaw width, face length, mouth height/width, lip thickness, nose angle and even the crookedness of your nose. And these are just some of the option available to you. You’re also able choose in a more abstract fashion, by choosing from different face templates and so on. The key is to give you the options, but it is up to you to decide if you want to actually use them or if you want to get into the game quickly.

Moving on, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of different hair styles. But you’re also able to customize your hair, not only by choosing the color of it, but you can also move a slider to set the length of your hair. The same goes for facial hair.
When you’re finally satisfied with how your character looks, and having chosen a name, you will be able to enter the game world. A harrowing event will ensue onboard the slave galley, ending with your character being thrown into the ocean and waking up the next day on the burning beaches of Tortage. From here you will embark upon a quest that will take you through the heart of this hostile jungle, as you make your way towards the freebooter village of Tortage, where you will finally start meeting up with other players, but still taking part in a limited single-player experience at the same time.

From there on you will proceed to selecting an archetype for your character, before eventually mastering a class and getting ready to face the massive world beyond – on the mainland – where you will begin your virtual life together with thousands of other unique players.
